In today’s society the obsession with beauty, body image, fashion, and heavy makeup seems to be everywhere. I’m not ashamed to say I too have been affected by it more than I would like. While I personally dabbled in the full makeup look eons ago and received attention for it, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of unease. It was clear that I was out of my comfort zone. I am definitely not a big fan of extravagant makeup even though I’ve always found the artistry to be very fascinating.
It is that same fascination that led me on a journey of self-discovery which eventually changed my perspective on the whole thing. Through Google searches and YouTube tutorials, I not only learned about the transformative power of makeup, but also how it allows us to explore our personalities, boost confidence, and even tap into a world of imagination. It’s truly remarkable how a few simple products can completely transform our appearance.
In spite of all that I’ve learned, I still couldn’t get comfortable with wearing a full-face of makeup. Why? Because part of me still thought it was about hiding my flaws and constantly conforming to certain unrealistic beauty standards. You see, I really love the way I look without any makeup on. It’s where I feel like myself, happy, and most at home; the same can be said about the way I dress. So it’s no surprise that I felt like wearing makeup meant I wasn’t happy with who I was or the way I looked.
Color me guilty or obsessed or whatever you want, but watching extravagant makeup tutorials online continued to captivate me. I can’t remember whose YouTube channel I was watching but what she was saying made so much sense that I had a “eureka moment.” It finally sunk in that for most people, myself included, makeup is about enhancing our natural features and feeling confident in our own skin. With this profound understanding, I was finally able to find solace in embracing makeup, but only by taking the minimalist route.
As someone who loves an understated lifestyle, my makeup routine is really simple… on most days all I need is a touch of BB cream or concealer, mascara, and some lip stain. For special occasions, I may add a bit of bronzer, eyeliner, and blush to fully complete my look. I admit it did take me a while to get here, but it is so worth it. I now feel good and confident knowing I can still be and look like myself whether or not I have on makeup. The key is to achieve a natural look while still feeling beautiful inside and out.
Here are the top 10 reasons I prefer a minimal makeup look:
1. Effortless beauty: Minimalist makeup allows me to showcase my natural beauty by enhancing my features rather than concealing them.
2. Time management: As a busy flight attendant, time is of the essence. A minimalist makeup routine saves me valuable time, making it perfect for my on-the-go lifestyle.
3. Let my skin breathe and glow: By focusing on lightweight and breathable products, minimalist makeup allows my skin to breathe and helps maintain its healthy appearance.
4. Highlight my unique features: I can celebrate my individuality by embracing what makes me unique, like my imperfections or distinct features.
5. Adaptability: Minimalist makeup looks can effortlessly adapt to any occasion, whether it’s a casual outing or a formal event. It definitely adds versatility in my style.
6. Low maintenance: With minimalist makeup, my look stays fresh throughout the day, requiring minimal touch-ups or maintenance — a true liberating experience.
7. Confidence: Minimalist makeup enhances my confidence by accentuating my best features. When I feel beautiful in my own skin, that confidence becomes my ultimate accessory.
8. Embrace my imperfections: By loving and accepting myself as I am, minimalist makeup allows me to appreciate my imperfections without excessive coverage or the pursuit of perfection.
9. Feel light, be free: Unlike a heavily layered makeup look, minimalist makeup feels light and comfortable on the skin, allowing me to move freely and express myself.
10. Simplicity: I love everything simple. The minimalist makeup approach brings out my true beauty by creating a simple appearance that enhances my natural radiance, allowing my inner beauty to shine through as well.
That being said, this post is about me and why I prefer light over full coverage makeup. This lifestyle of embracing the minimalist makeup approach is not for everyone. How we choose to wear makeup is personal and unique to everyone. Whether you prefer a full glam look or a more natural approach like I do, the most important thing is to feel confident and comfortable in your own skin. For me, less is more when it comes to enhancing my natural features and embracing my uniqueness. You do you and embrace what makes you feel your best!
