I was so excited about going to Dîner En Blanc (DEB) in Cap-Haitien this year. It was supposed to be my first time ever attending this fascinating event. I even had most of my outfits picked out. Originally I made plans to go in 2020, but the pandemic got in the way and the event was cancelled for two consecutive years. So imagine my excitement when I heard it was brought back to Haiti in 2022. Thank you organizers! Right then and there I decided that 2023 would be MY year to fly to Haiti for DEB. With the help of my amazing and trusted friend Christian Dorvilier, I had no doubt it was finally going to happen this time <sigh>…
One thing we all know about life is that it’s constantly changing and things don’t always go as we expect. Well there has been a major shift in my life this year and I have no choice but to postpone my trip to Cap Haitien, again! But make no mistake, my excitement is far from subsiding. Now more than ever I am determined to make it to DEB. Why? Because I love everything this event stands for. That’s why!
About Dîner en Blanc
Le Diner en Blanc (Dinner in White) is a wonderful event that showcases the elegance and beauty of simplicity. The tradition started in Paris, France back in 1988 and has since spread to more than 120 cities around the world. It’s an outdoor picnic-style dinner where guests show up dressed in all white and gather at a secret location in their city, generally a public space or landmark. They bring their own food, drinks, tables, centerpieces, chairs, and tableware, creating an elegant and visually stunning atmosphere. Fantastique, isn’t it?
Here’s why I am crazy about Dîner en Blanc in Cap-Haitien
Cap Haitien, also knows as Okap, is a major city in Haiti. Diner en Blanc does a terrific job at highlighting the positive aspects of my country by showcasing its beauty, culture, and potential reinstatement as a tourist destination. Through Diner en Blanc the world gets to see Haiti for the beautiful country it still is, and the fact that it has so much more to offer than what is commonly known.
Okap is a historically significant and culturally rich city with many landmarks like the Palais Sans Soucis and the Citadelle Henri Christophe. It’s also home to Bois Caïman, the site where the slave insurrection was planned during the Haitian Revolution. I think what makes DEB in Okap even more spectacular and unique is because it combines the elegance and sophistication of the traditional event with the vibrant culture and beautiful scenery of the city.
From what I hear and see, the event typically takes place in a picturesque location. Some sites and beaches that have been used to host Diner en Blanc include Labadie Beach, Citadelle Laferrière, Fort Delpeche, and Cap-Haïtien Cathedral. These locations offer stunning views and add a sense of history and grandeur to the event.
Based on past-events’ pictures floating all over social media, in addition to the fun and gorgeous outfits accessorized with headpieces, pearls, gloves and umbrellas, it’s clear that many components of Haitian cuisine, music, and dance are also incorporated into the event, creating a truly authentic, memorable and extraordinary experience.
What also adds to its appeal and uniqueness is the exclusivity surrounding the event. In case you didn’t know, Diner en Blanc in Haiti is by invitation only. By limiting attendance to invited guests, organizers are able to ensure a certain level of quality and sophistication. The invitation-only nature adds a sense of excitement and anticipation, making it even more special.
God willing I hope to be one of the many fortunate guests to attend Diner en Blanc in Cap-Haitian in 2024. Until then, I wish all attendees this year a safe, fun-filled, and larger-than-life experience.
As always, please remember to drink responsibly!
