First Ever Layover in Salt Lake City!

Being a flight attendant comes with incredible perks. One of my favorites is the chance to explore new destinations during layovers. This past Tuesday, I had an 18-hour stop in Salt Lake City, UT, and I was beyond excited. It was my first time visiting this vibrant city, even though the temperature clocked in at a scorching 98 degrees outside! Still, I couldn’t resist stepping out to see what Salt Lake City had to offer.

It’s a known fact that crew members don’t always hang out together on layovers, so I took this opportunity to enjoy some “me time” and explore at my own pace. After a quick change in my hotel room, I headed out onto the streets to see the city firsthand. I started my adventure on Temple Street and made my way toward Main Street – a perfect starting point to soak in the local sights.

Salt Lake City’s architecture immediately caught my eye. The city’s buildings combine historic charm with modern touches, creating a unique skyline. The iconic Temple Square, with its stunning Mormon pioneer-era buildings and lush gardens, is truly a sight to behold. The intricate details of the Salt Lake Temple soared above, reminding me of the city’s religious and cultural roots. Nearby, I paused at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, which offers beautiful views from its upper floors and is a piece of history itself.

Places I Visited

  • Downtown Salt Lake City Mall: A lively shopping hub with a mix of boutiques, national brands, and cozy cafes. Perfect for some window shopping or grabbing an iced coffee to beat the heat.
  • Temple Square: The heart of the city’s history and faith, beautifully maintained with flower gardens, fountains, and impressive architecture.
  • The Plaza near the Church Office Building where flags from 91 nations are displayed to symbolize God’s love for everyone.
  • Joseph Smith Memorial Building: A grand historic site with panoramic views from its upper decks and a glimpse into Mormon history.
  • Church History Museum: Packed with artifacts, exhibits, and stories that showcase the rich history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
  • Capitol Theater: An ornate historic theater that hosts performances and events. The stunning architecture inside is just as impressive as the shows held there.

By the time I checked my watch, I was happily surprised — I had clocked over 5 miles of walking! It was now 6:30 pm, and I knew it was time to head back to my hotel and get ready for bed. But before I even take a step forward, I spot a cozy restaurant and decide to stop in.

Enter Takashi — a welcoming spot with a chic decor vibe and a lively atmosphere. The hostess happily found me a table, despite the place being packed. I immediately felt the cool, modern decor and upbeat ambiance. I kicked things off with a classic vodka martini, savoring that sharp, smooth flavor, while eagerly anticipating dinner.

I ordered some fresh salmon rolls which I ate on the spot, and teriyaki chicken to-go, which I enjoyed back in my hotel room. Salt Lake City’s food scene really surprised me — it’s diverse and delicious, with an authentic touch.

All in all my Salt Lake City layover turned out to be a mini adventure of discovery. From stunning architecture and history to tasty food and long walks, I left with a new appreciation for this city’s charm. As a traveler, I love finding those hidden gems and soaking in the local vibe — and Salt Lake City did not disappoint.

If you ever find yourself passing through, I highly recommend carving out some time to explore. Whether you’re into history, shopping, or just enjoying a scenic walk, SLC’s got it all.

Thanks for reading — and stay tuned for more travel adventures from the skies!
