Exciting news for film lovers and Caribbean culture fanatics! The 21st annual DC Caribbean FilmFest is set to take place this June at AFI Silver, co-presented by the Caribbean Association of World Bank Group and IMF Staff, Caribbean Professionals Network, Institute of Caribbean Studies, and Africa World Now Project. Featuring 11 films from eight different Caribbean countries, this year’s festival promises to be a unique and thrilling showcase of the region’s rich cultural heritage through the lens of film.
Kicking off the festival is a special 35th-anniversary screening of ONE HAND DON’T CLAP, a newly restored documentary that traces the history of calypso and soca music from their birth in the African and East Indian traditions of Trinidad and Tobago to their global spread. The highly anticipated restoration was made possible by the Academy Film Archive and the Women’s Film Preservation Fund of New York Women in Film & Television, with support from the Leon Levy Foundation.
Other notable films include the crowd-pleasing Trinidadian comedy CHEE$E, KUMINA QUEEN followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Nyasha Laing, Canadian Screen Award winner BROTHER by Clement Virgo, Saint Lucian historical drama SHANTAYE’S WORLD, documentary BEBO exploring the life and legacy of Cuban musician Bebo Valdés, and the immersive exploration of Haitian artistic and religious rituals in KITE ZO A, an official selection at 2023 SXSW.
All-access passes to the festival are available, offering significant savings at just $100. Don’t miss your chance to experience the vibrant and diverse cultures of the Caribbean through the art of film at the DC Caribbean FilmFest.
