International Women’s Day 2023 – I dream of an equitable world

March 8, 2023 is International Women’s Day! But it’s much more than a global celebration of social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women all over the world. It’s also a day that raises awareness to issues like gender equality, reproductive rights, as well as violence and abuse against women.

The theme for this year’s IWD holiday is #EmbraceEquity. The reason I love this campaign theme so much is because it’s a call to action. In addition, it’s an invitation for people everywhere to come together to spotlight and celebrate every woman’s hard work to create her own path to success. Even though women have come a long way, there’s still a lot more that needs to be done in order to build a more equitable world. This year’s concept is truly a powerful way to help amplify that.

Coming from humble beginnings, I watched my mother work her butt off to make sure my siblings and I got the education she never had. She started out selling produce at the street market in Haiti, to end up here in the United States working in nursing homes, and to eventually owning her house. Like many others, she was able to accomplish all that in spite of existing barriers of race, language, education, social status, and everything else that comes with being an immigrant with no formal schooling AND a woman. I can only imagine how hard it must have been for her.

#EmbraceEquity is what we all need to do to make it possible for people all across the board to have a fair chance at freely pursuing their dreams. It means promoting justice and fairness. It’s about ensuring there is full access, equality of opportunity, and advancement for everyone. It’s also about identifying and removing the systemic and structural barriers that have blocked some people from getting exactly what they need to be successful.

Together, you and me, let’s embrace equity. Not just for this year’s International Women’s Day, but everyday. Because when we embrace equity, we embrace inclusion, fairness, diversity, unity, and ultimately equality and success for all…thus creating a more sustainable tomorrow.

I enjoyed reading your blog. Thank you. It had a light feel to a heavy topic. What is brought to mind when I hear the word immigrant is hope and perseverance. Like your mother, my father decided to move to this country in hopes to lead a better life and follow on the path of the American dream.

    1. Yes, hope and perseverance usually go hand in hand. Without them we would never taste success. I’m glad you enjoyed reading it. And thank you for taking the time yo comment. 💛
