If you’re reading this, you might be navigating the waters of perimenopause like I am, or maybe you’re just curious about this whole phase of life. As a 49-year-old woman, I’ve been experiencing some serious changes for a few years now. And it’s been quite the journey! From mood swings to night sweats, it feels overwhelming at times; but I’m here to share my story and hopefully help others feel a little less alone.

What is Perimenopause?
Perimenopause is basically the time leading up to menopause. Mine started in my early 40s but it can vary widely from person to person. Through my own research I discovered this transitional phase typically lasts several years (yes, years!) and marks when our bodies begin producing less estrogen. It’s important to know that every woman’s experience is different, but there are some common signs we can all look out for.
What to Expect
Ah, the signs of perimenopause! Sometimes they feel like an unwanted surprise party—one you definitely weren’t expecting. A few symptoms I’ve personally experienced include:
Night Sweats and Hot Flashes: Just when you think you’re falling asleep, BAM—you’re in sweat city! I’ve found myself tossing and turning through countless nights thanks to these unexpected heat waves.
Mood Swings: I know my family is feeling them too. One minute I’m on top of the world, and the next, I’m annoyed by every little thing. If that’s also you, hang in there; it’s all part of the ride!
Insomnia: Sleep? What’s that? The struggle to stay asleep has been real, with my mind racing even when my body is begging for rest.
Memory Issues: Is it just me, or do I suddenly forget why I walked into a room? The question “What did I come here for?” has become my new catchphrase. It’s almost comical!
Changes in Sexual Drive: Let’s just say things aren’t quite as hot and heavy as they used to be. My fiancée keeps saying I’ve changed, and he’s not wrong. Some of us do have libido issues during perimenopause, and that’s completely normal. I just can’t wait to feel like myself again!
What’s Surprising About It All
One surprising aspect of perimenopause is how different each woman’s experience can be. During conversations with friends, I learned that although we share some common symptoms, we can have entirely different reactions or changes. It can feel so isolating at times, but that’s why having open conversations is crucial—whether with friends, family, or within our communities, being open to talk about it is key!
Why It’s Not as Scary as It Sounds
I know, I know—it sounds daunting. But let’s not forget that perimenopause is a natural part of life. With so many women (celebrities, influencers, friends etc…) sharing their experiences and tips, it helps to make this journey a little less overwhelming. Honestly, it actually feels comforting to know I am not alone and we’re all in this together!

What I’ve Been Doing
Through these ups and downs, I’ve found some strategies that have helped me cope:
Staying Active: Exercise has become my best friend! It helps improve my mood and eases joint pain. Thanks to Wanno dragging me to Planet Fitness, I now exercise 3-4 times a week and go on long walks when I don’t hit the gym. I’ve also started incorporating weights to build muscle mass for energy and longevity.
Relaxation: I’ve taken up deep-breathing exercises to help calm my mind during those hectic moments. Plus, diving into fantasy books has been a fantastic escape! Who knew dragons and faeries could help relieve stress?
Supplements: I started taking daily multivitamins for women over 40 to fill nutritional gaps in my diet. I must say I’ve been feeling healthier and more energized!
Healthy Eating: I’m not one for strict diets (I love to eat too much), so I’m focusing on a balanced diet rich in whole foods, fruits, veggies, and lean proteins to help manage cravings and boost my energy levels.
Talking It Out: Connecting with friends who are also experiencing perimenopause has been a game-changer for me. We share stories, laughs, and support, which makes a huge difference knowing that we’re all in this together.
Seeking Help: I’ve consulted with my healthcare provider about my experiences, and it’s made a world of difference. But I know that’s not enough. I’m planning to visit a specialized clinic for more help and will keep you all updated on my journey. Remember, there’s no shame in seeking help and advice!
I hope this post resonates with you and makes you feel less alone on your journey through perimenopause. At the end of the day, we all deserve to feel our best, regardless of what our bodies are going through. Perimenopause may come with its challenges, but I hope just like me you also see it as an opportunity to learn more about yourself and embrace new aspects of life.
