The Underestimated Power of Expectations

Things don’t always happen the way we expect them to, but that doesn’t diminish the fact that expectations play a crucial role in shaping our outcomes and overall success. Whether it’s in our personal or professional lives, the power of expectations cannot be underestimated. Take today for example. It’s my first day starting work at my new base (DCA) since I transferred from Miami. Even though my duties haven’t really changed, it still feels like I’m starting a new job.

Starting a new job can be an exhilarating and nerve-wracking experience. The mix of excitement and nervousness that comes with entering a new work environment can often create a rollercoaster of emotions. From meeting new colleagues to navigating unfamiliar routines, the first day on the job can be both daunting and filled with anticipation.

I’ve always considered myself to be a glass-half-full person. Almost every decision I make I expect them to yield positive results. Is it always the case? Of course not. But I still try my best to remain optimistic while I make the needed adjustments to turn my outcomes into more favorable ones. Optimistic is definitely what I was when I arrived at work today and it paid off big!

When I woke up this morning I couldn’t wait to get to work. All I felt was the excitement of flying my first trip and meeting my new colleagues. After working in Miami for nearly 11 years, I thought I’d be nervous in a smaller base; but surprisingly I wasn’t nervous at all. I showed up to work 40 minutes early, excited and ready to start writing this new chapter of my life.

One tiny concern I had, which quickly dissipated the moment I met the crew, was that they would be overly accommodating and that would make me feel uncomfortable (you can credit that one to my introverted nature). Instead the welcome I received, or lack thereof, made me feel right at home. Unceremoniously I was instantly accepted as a member of the family. Deep down inside that’s exactly what I had hoped for.

This goes to show having positive expectations can indeed lead to positive outcomes. It can also influence how we interact with others and how they perceive us. I find when we are confident and positive, we tend to project that energy onto others, creating a more welcoming and collaborative work environment. Speaking from experience I believe building relationships with my coworkers is essential. I love the connections I forged in Miami. Not only they created great friendships and a strong support system, they also fostered teamwork and personal development. And I am very hopeful that this trend will also continue in Washington, DC.

Having said all that, it’s important however to strike a balance when it comes to expectations. Positive expectations can fuel motivation and success, while negative expectations can hinder progress and limit potential. Similarly unrealistic or too high expectations can set us up for disappointment. Not only should our expectations be realistic, they must also be based on our abilities, efforts, and of course the circumstances at hand.

In conclusion, today I learned that expectations have a profound impact on our outcomes and experiences. Each new environment brings with it a unique set of opportunities for learning, collaboration, and self-discovery. The thrill and trepidation of starting anything new can pave the way for both personal and professional fulfillment. By approaching the unknown with an open mind and welcoming the uncertainties, we can embark on a transformative journey and unlock our full potential.
