Buckle up because I’m about to take you on a journey to one of the most captivating destinations I’ve ever visited—Guyana! This trip came about thanks to our amazing friends Ewart and Kasey, who are from this beautiful country, and they invited Wanno and I to celebrate Ewart’s parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. Let me just say, it was an invitation we couldn’t refuse!
It goes without saying that my darling friend Daedrian was also included, and she brought her cousin Kadean along too… Before we knew it, each of us was boarding different flights from different cities, all headed to Guyana for what would turn out to be another adventure of a lifetime.
The Hotel
We spent three nights at Parc Rayne, and wow, what a gem! Tucked away in the midst of a bustling area, the boutique hotel felt like a serene oasis. The vibe was so relaxing, making it the perfect spot to unwind after our travels. And oh my goodness, the food! I can’t stop raving about the pepper pot—it was absolutely delicious! Each bite was like a flavor explosion, and honestly, I could have eaten it for every meal. It was a wonderful introduction to the rich culinary scene of Guyana.
Day 1: Midnight Madness and Chill Vibes
After a five-hour flight, Wanno and I finally arrived at the hotel around 2 AM on Friday, utterly exhausted but buzzing with excitement. We hit the sheets almost immediately, hoping to recharge for the adventure ahead. When we woke up around 8 AM, the rain was pouring outside, but that didn’t dampen our spirits! Breakfast was filled with incredible local dishes that kept us going all morning. As the hours ticked by, we learned that Ewart and Kasey had flight complications and wouldn’t be arriving until 11 PM. So, Wanno and I decided to embrace the chill vibes of the hotel. We spent our day resting, playing billiards, munching on snacks, and chatting with the super friendly staff and other guests at the bar. It turned out to be the perfect way to kick back and relax!
Day 2: Saturday Shenanigans
Saturday arrived, and it was a day I will never forget! We were picked up by our friends, packed into a van with 11 of us. Our first stop was Ogle Airport, where we met the legendary Brian Tiwarie, the founder of BK Group (affectionately called Mr. B or Mr. BK). He treated our group to a private breakfast at Bradley Hangar in honor of the anniversary couple. The food was absolutely scrumptious, but what I loved most was the sense of familiarity, excitement, laughter, and joy that filled the air. It felt like one big family gathering. To be as welcoming as Mr. B was should be a crime. Not only did we drink most – if not all – of his Guinness, he was delighted to see us do so.
The Breathtaking Kaieteur Falls
After breakfast, we hopped on one of Mr. BK’s planes—a Cessna Grand Caravan 208—for a thrilling 45-minute flight to Kaieteur Falls. The views from above were out of this world. Once we landed, our tour guide took us trekking through the lush Amazon forest, where I was absolutely mesmerized by the exotic and rare foliage. One standout was the **Sundew flower**, a carnivorous plant that attracts and eats bugs. We also encountered the magnificent **Lai-Lai tree**, which can grow up to 50 feet tall and holds 4-5 gallons of water in its trunk.
A pivotal moment for me was when I finally got to stand in front of the falls. The sheer power and beauty left me speechless. Kaieteur Falls truly is one of the most incredible natural wonders I’ve ever seen. Standing there, I felt so tiny compared to nature’s magnificence. It was a humbling experience that reminded me of the importance of preserving our planet.
The Surprise Proposal
One of the greatest highlights of the day was when Ewart surprised Kasey by getting down on one knee and asking her to marry him, with the stunning falls as their backdrop. Talk about a fairytale moment!
After the proposal, we flew to Bartica to a beautiful estate owned by Mr. BK for a fabulous lunch. On the way, we explored a rock quarry and even got a sneak peek of a water park under construction slated to open this coming November. By the time we returned to Georgetown, the sun had set, and we were greeted with yet another surprise: an engagement dinner complete with a live band!
Day 3: The Main Event
Sunday was the main event—the 50th wedding anniversary party. We got ourselves all dressed up and ready to celebrate this monumental milestone. When we arrived at the venue, it was like stepping into a fairy tale; the decorations were stunning, and I could already feel the love and joy radiating from everyone there.
Ewart’s parents renewed their vows and it was so beautiful. Between the drinks flowing, the delicious food, and the epic dancing, I can’t even pick a favorite part! Every moment felt special. Even two weeks later, I still feel excited every time I think about how grand and exquisite everything was.
Day 4: Farewell Guyana
As always, all good things must come to an end; and it was time to go back home to our kids and daily hustles. So, Wanno and I departed Guyana the next morning. We are beyond grateful to our friends for this unforgettable experience that we will cherish forever. Thank you Guyana and our incredible friends for an unforgettable adventure. I can’t wait to return someday …and I’m hoping very soon for a certain wedding I know will be even more fabulous than the proposal!
